Hi Filippo.
Here's a git I made in the early 90's that might interest you.
It is made of koa, which wasn't very attractive, so I finished it with acrylic auto paint, twice I might add.
I used nitro as a sealer, then on the 8th coat of acrylic, it alligatored on me.
compatability is important to me now. Had to start from ground zero.
Anyway, it is a through neck, with bandsawn ribs, about 1/2" thick, 1/4" top and back,
purple heart fb, which now looks like mud, malachite fretmarkers, and real copper bindings.
The bridge I had a machinist do some of the work, I did what I could on it.
I made the nut, so to speak.
Overall, that git was played, a LOT.
It's a little beat up, but I really like that weird little beast!
Stayed in tune!

I'm making a "rockabilly archtop" in the $100 Challenge over on MIMF, but I had to throw in the towel, as I'm already way over budget... I'm documenting the build blog style, and here's what I just posted tonight.

Ok, time to attach the neck. I usually make bolt on acoustics, but that would not be practical on this one. Instead, I’m doing a traditional dovetail. I don’t have a template for that, so I’m going old school. Marking the dovetail on the neck

Image

Cutting

Image

Done

Image

Cutting the mortise in the body

Image

Using the centerline finder to make sure the neck lines up, as I’m trimming the joint

Image

There’s that chalk again!

Image

Binding the headstock now. I’m using a laminate trimmer with homemade base that has an edge guide to cut the rabbet.

Image

Binding glued and taped up

Image

And the neck can be glued to the body.

i've been working on a guitar with all damascus hardware in my free time, i started a thread for it quite a while back but got caught up with a bunch of other stuff, school and the like you know. anyway i have been working on that and making some headway here lately and i'll probably post up some pics fairly soon. (i tend to forget the camera)

im on to a few more new ones right now.......

5 string....cocobolo neck, solid w/ luthiers joint, and cocobolo f/b also.....

6 string 5 piece neck-thru angled glue up (the hardwood pieces are angled/tapered smaller as they get to the top of the neck.....a real pain to figure out when building to keep everything even......)
Image

5 string fretless

4 string fretless.....this was sort of a proto, a buddy of mine wanted to feel super easy upper register of the fretboard access, this did it........just looks a little much in the back.....

4 string bolt-on walnut back, padauk top, cocobolo 3 pc neck with spanish luthiers joint, dark macassar ebony f/b (alan woody had borrowed this one for a year or so, wont sell it now....)

one of my main axes.......built this one about 20 years ago..... pau ferro neck, coco bolo fingerboard, mahogany back with a sweet quilt maple top......trans root beer burst with gold center.......never inlayed the neck, wanted to have one without, ive been thinking of pulling the frets and inlaying it now though, and reradiusing it to compound......nothing beats a compound radius with a floyd.......i have the same piece of quilt on mahogany i cut from this one that i saved and never used after all these years......i may use it for the neck i posted in the above post.......i need something really nice for it......and its about time i do something with it.....

4 string trans emerald green burst maple/quilt maple neck-thru with pau ferro f/b.....ignore my socks......

Filippo, thanks for encouraging this. This part of the OLF should be full of build threads! We need the traffic, but some of us(myself included) need to learn.
I'm like Verhoevenc, in a way. I plan to post a build thread here, but I build real slow, as funds are available. Also, I don't have a real shop, so I'm at the mercy of the weather as well.
I'm on my second scratch build. I know there are others on here that have vastly more experience, so I don't know how much interest there'll be. But I plan to post a build thread so folk can see how this beginner does things. It will be probably in the summer, though, as I want to know that the build is close enough to being done that I'll be able to post regularly enough that it won't fall off the radar. I'm photo documenting as I go, but I'll save all that until I can post the whole thing.
Meantime, when I have the time, i'll sit back and enjoy the other builds, and chime in when I have something to contribute.
Cool thread!

im always in the middle of multiple builds, i just have to be on the ball about having the camera there for all the processes.........which is why there are some things missing in that neck build post........shaping the headstock, laminating it, shaping the back of the neck, etc......ive just joined here, but im up for showing processes of full builds. something i never used to do was get pics of stuff i built before it went out the door, and now im kicking myself for it, because there are quite a few hings i did that were one of a kinds that i wish i had documentation of......now i at least take a few finish pics of things...

heres another neck i did for a customer, just click the link for the slideshow.....

nice, i like the figured walnut. i have some of that here myself with killer grain.

Image

have you ever had problems with a 1 piece flamed maple neck? i refuse to build them any longer unless i do 3 piece and alternate the grain, or put in another stable hardwood like purpleheart or something else hard and stiff not prone to teisting.......i built one and its the only neck that twisted on me..............and it was old seasoned wood.

Let me get these two acoustics off my bench...and then build one for myself....and then I'll tackle an electric. Pretty sure you guys will be around then so all is good. Would you believe I've never even PLAYED an electric guitar? [uncle]

Yeah Yeah Yeah......Honestly until Filippo started posting that electric he's making....and then VerHeeeberSlapper posting that really cool body shape in that other thread.....I couldn't find the interest. I'll tackle an electric once I meet my commitments on these other instruments....then I'll be blowin' yalls phones WAY up!

This is my very first build, finished almost a year ago.

J-Bass shape, a bit modified, from a 2 piece swamp ash
P/J pickup combo, from Seymour
1-piece hard maple neck, bolt-on 4 screws
Schaller bridge, tuners and straplocks
Ebony knobs and electronics cover (back)
Bone nut

Finished with several thin coats of polymerized tung oil, applied with a cotton rag. A bit of micromesh, then some wax.
No porefilling.

That's how we do it round here.
