Swamp ash is a metaphor for light weight ash wood that will make your guitar sound like its 1959. If you find it, they saw you coming first. I suspect you know this but just wanted to publicize it here. Sorry I can help you more.

Emerald Ash Borer is the culprit. A very bad, bad boy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_ash_borer

You would figure that a southern US supplier would be the cheapest considering the species is located in the south.

Fraxinus caroliniana

Try a search using wood finder.

I think the problem is the mill just cranks it out as ash. Then the boards are sorted by weight affter the fact. The lighter boards piled in the swamp ash basket and sold to us unsuspecting guitar builders for big bucks. The rest put in the standard ash pile to be sold at a fraction of the cost.
