I'm making routing templates for some solid bodies I intend on making in the near future and am hung up on the dimensions I need to have for the pickup cavities. Specifically, I'm looking for the size for a P90 with dog ears on a Les Paul Jr type guitar...(getting back to my punk youth, I guess!!).

I've checked websites and they all seem to have the finished dimensions for their pickups, but I just don't know how much bigger to cut them.

Also, what do you find is the biggest challenge building electrics? I've only done acoustics so far and thay's all I have to base my experiences on.

Any help is appreciated.

I make the opening big enough so the pick-up can be adjusted freely.

The hardest thing I find in building electrics is being unique.

Hi Jamie,
Before you start building or even designing your guitar I would purchase all the hardware you're going to use. Then use some scrap wood like spruce lumber from the building supplier and test your templates on them. If the pick-up goes in exactly as you would like then you can use it on the guitar.

I think the most challenging thing about electrics is getting the finish perfect.

Remember to consider finish film thickness and any shielding you want to put in.
good luck.
