I need some help. While pre contouring the back rim I got a little to aggressive with the 16" radius dish on the back and dropped my over all rim height . At the neck it is 3 1/4" I would like to get it to 3 1/2"

My question is, can I make up the height by leaving the kerfing about .125" proud on the top and back? I would also have to add height back to the tail and neck block. My binding strips with purfling are .250" tall. My thought is that this area will be routed out anyway for the binding.

Thanks
Richard

Um Richard

I think we all need some help from time to time ...at least me do.

Now regarding your question. Me don't know what you can do. But why not do it and then you'll know. Then once you know, no body, no how, no way gonna ever take that knowing away from you.

Oh Sure Michael, are you one of those old fuddy-duddy's like me that still use the old fashioned linings with kerfs in them rather than the new fangled kerfings? :D

Well lets just say I find kerfing much harder to clamp in place than kerfed linings. [:Y:] That and the fact that Grumpy spanked me more than once over using kerfing [uncle]

Whenever you guys get up in arms about "kerfings," I always imagine some grumpy old guy working as a shoe salesman yelling at customers because "They're called 'laced shoe strings,' not 'shoe laces!' Lace is a verb! It's just a 'shoe string' if you haven't laced it!" :)

I am not up in arms in anyway! I just still find it humorous. I did not get on to anyone about using kerfing. I merely caring on a long held OLF joke tradition over calling linings kerfing. Just like French polish being a finish technique and French Polish being an ethnic group. Daho!!!

I know nobody was getting too uptight about it, just having fun. :)

OK it took me a minute, but I get it now :D , even LMI gets it wrong http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/thirdproduc ... er=Kerfing
Kind of like in my profession people always mention that they are "legally bling w/o their glass" Not possible, by definition you can be legally blind with glasses. After a while I just quit explaining the difference unless someone asked

Heh, heh. Just write us off as some pedantic old word-smiths, we was jus funnin'. It is the curse of growing up with a school teacher mother and verbafied-nouns and nounified-verbs just are too much to leave alone. It is like picking up a fire-cracker with a burning fuse, you know you shouldn't but it is just too good to resist. And I won't even start on "Impacted {must.. bite.. acerbic.. tongue-of-death... ;)

leaving the kerfed linings proud will definitely work to get you some extra height. the neck and tail blocks might not be so easy, however. which direction does the grain run in your neck and tail blocks? if it runs parallel to your sides, then your job will be much easier. if perpendicular to your sides, then things might get more interesting.

ive never done this, so my input is purely speculation, but no one mentioned grain orientation in the neck and tail blocks, so i thought id throw it out there.
