Has anyone ever produced a list of "tonewoods" from the best to the least as a refrence chart etc:
This may exhist , and im sure the "best" is subject to various builders experience and likes .

asking luthiers for a list of their favorite tonewoods and you will find we don't agree LOL . My favorite is Brazilian and least favorite is mango.
The standards fare of mahogany and rosewood are a good 2nd. Top woods I like Red spruce Bearclaw Sitka Lutz carpathian and engelman
to this list I am sure there will be additions and disagreements but that is part of the fun , if we all agree then look out it may be the end of the world I have found Bubinga to be a terrific tonewood and one that I think will prove itself .

Best is definitely subjective...but I think we'd all probably agree that the best sounding guitars are the ones made by the best builders, regardless of the wood selection.

Yo, Wud

If such a list exists, even as a reference chart...and you find it ...please be so kind as to let me know where you may have found it so I can go and burn it, and then issue a fatwa on who wrote such nonsense.

Well, it's a bit like asking a bunch of musicians what is their favorite album.

Just a correction ! you must have ment "Abbey Road" :D pfft .

To the actual question and with my limited knowledge, I would have to agree to what others have said, its very individual ! .

I would like to twist the question to "what are you´ll favorite tonewood to work with !!"
As for top-wood I love German spruce, its like butter to carve. Lutz is also real fun to work with, same for adirondack. Sitka "at least the ones I have workt with are not to much fun to carve.
B/S I am not sure, EIR is great to work with, same for mahogany wish is real easy to work, Cocobolo smell bad and is real hard to sand as it clogs the paper etc. but looks Awesome. Black Limba, hmm love the look, but I guess it has a tad more chance to crack than for ex mahogany. etc etc etc

Abby Road ?? wasnt that the Monkies album ? laughing6-hehe oops_sign

As for what ive worked with so far , its been Mahagony , walnut , and some sapel that was given me recently . I am working on gluing up some cherry to make an entire mandolin from cherry wood next. I have -NO - 0 - nada- Big goose egg- experience with any exotic woods ergo the question
