Would someone please explain what "hot rodding" a guitar means?

It means customizing similar to what some do to cars. Maybe an upgrade on the pickups and electronics or a custom paint job with graphics or just a different color. It is making a sometimes boring guitar what you want it to be. Sometimes the upgrades can make a not so great guitar just what you wished for.
