Well, it did not turn out 100% as I wanted but at least now I know the areas that need addressing!

It sure took a good while to make and wasn't the easiest thing I ever did but it was worth the effort.

Peter, for some reason I thought you had already mastered the bevel....is this one longer than normal, stretching across the entire lower bout? How does this feel in terms of comfort compared to shorter bevels?

I like it Peter. It makes the guitar look more even somehow, the longer bevel that is.

for me that was the easy part.... the angle transitions were more of a challenge.

Looking good there Peter. I bet the long bevel makes it easy to hold what ever size the player.

I too want to try a bevel at some point, just not sure when that will be. I personally like the smooth bevel ala Ryan versus the sharp corners of the Laskin bevel.

Very nice looking Peter!

I especially like the lighter purfs with the darker sides and bevel wood. What type of wood did you use in your bevel (stained or natural)?

I realize you have yet to finish this beauty, but what is/was your first impression of the weight of your box compared to your older ones?

I used African Blackwood for the back and sides and the bevel is Macassar ebony. Its a bit heavy but thats because African Blackwood tends to be on the heavy side.

Peter, I think you were wise to extend the bevel around the lower bout toward the butt, especially on this size guitar.

I was watching Garnet Rogers in concert the other day, and noticed his arm was exclusively crossing the guitar near the back of the lower bout, not at the side of the lower bout. This might be a player-by-player individual comfort thing, but it also makes me suspect that only large guitars or smaller players probably drape their arm over the side of the lower bout.

Please, post a "this is how I did it" thread, with lots of photos and text documentation (including "gotchas"), and now that you have completed one, what will you do differently when you are asked to do the next one.

Oh Mama, African Blackwood and Macassar Ebony, whew, that is going to look stellar under some finish.

Very brave in choosing these two woods to work with as a first try at the bevel. I bet it is going to sound wonderful. Please do keep us posted!

Looks very nice for a first. On the other hand what's the real point of a bevel other than looking cool? It would seem that you sacrifice some vibrational area on the top and alter the dynamics of the rim/top joint in a very important spot. Is it really that uncomfortable playing a conventional small bodied guitar? Have you guys seen any change in tone (for better or worse) in the same model with and without a bevel?
Just wondering.

bevels do make a huge difference as far as comfort when playing.
some people believe (and I've heard) that a slightly asymmetrical soundboard with less area on the bass side actually improves bass and response.

BTW, this is not a small body guitar.

Well done Peter! I would be interested in how you did this also. I have had customers ask about them and so far I have managed to talk them out of it. If I knew a little more on how this is done, I may be willing to try it.
