Hey guys, I'm looking for a source for walnut purfling strips, but I keep coming up empty handed. Anybody got any leads? Thanks - justin

If you just want single lines, buy veneer and trim the strips yourself with a knife. Just be careful that you buy plain wood veneer, and not something with a backing. There are some on ebay now, and there are large veneer suppliers that also would have this.

What size strips are you looking for? I may be able to help you out.

Hi Ken, I'm looking for strips close to a thickness of .02, .100 wide, and around 32-36 inches long. That would be great if you had some. Thanks - Justin

Rockler usually has Walnut veneer, in plain wood. Also, Constantines, has lots of plain wood veneer. Of course you would have to thickness sand it to what you want.

The .1 is no problem, but the .02 is....at least for me. Your best bet would be to look at some veneer as it comes standard thickness at .022 most of the time. You may want to look at www.veneersupplies.com or eBay and see if any of this suits your needs.

purflings are normally around .8 thick and .140 wide. I could do this easily.

Are you able to process some scrap strips to the thickness you want? I have A LOT of walnut strips that I just picked up from the woodworking school, and some nice tiger maple as well. PM me if you want some of it...the walnut that is - Bruce Dickey already laid claim to the maple...

If you are doing a walnut back and sides, you might have enough to make purfling strips from the edges of the two sides (if not already bent), slice a strip off of each of you desired width and you can thickness this to .04, .06, .10 or whateverf or bindings
Veneers are usually 1/42 = 0.02.

.04 is about two veneer sheets which you are thinking of already. Thoughts on laminating glue? I've used titebond but actually prefer gorrilla type urethane. It seems to stand up to bending heat better. Wrap in wax paper and clamp between flat stock to make a "sandwich" of the whole 6" wide veneer roll and slice strips from this. Wear vinyl or latex gloves, this is gooey messy. You can slice off 1/8" with a band saw or exacto knife. bandsaw is faster but leaves a fuzzy edge. Pull the strip through sandpaper folded in 2 and it cleans up nicely.
