sorry, i should have passed this on to you in our 'canadian supplier's' conversation a while back. this is the place that i've used for tru oil as well. not only is the price great, but visiting the store is like going on a field trip for me. beautiful store with lots to look at.
while i'm here and we're talking about canadian suppliers, do either of you (or any other canadians on the forum) know of anyone in canada who does nitro or poly finishing for others? i love truoil, but would consider sending guitars out if we had someone in canada providing the service that addam stark and tony ferguson provide.

No problem- when we were talking about sources, I wasn't that interested in Tru-Oil anyway!

Sorry, I don't know of a finish farmer in Canada. I too would be interested if there was one we coule trust, especially one who would do a polyester finish.

I've seen tru-oil at WallyWorld, in the sporting section....

I know someone who's working toward offering polyester finishing to other luthiers in Canada. Can't say names, since I haven't asked him, but it's looking like he'll be ready in a couple months.

I'm wondering what the big deal is about tru-oil. Its a varnish so what makes it so special that I would want to use it compared to other varnish's. Its very pricey compared to other varnish's.

Depends on what side of Ont you're talkin' bout    Of course the majority of the populous live East of Lake Superior but, that's just the population (which is what I think you mean by "central") not necessarily geographically though which makes the difference in shipping costs. (I know you know this, just stating the obvious)

Shipping from the west coast would be a fare bit to tack on just to the finishing cost. I think I'll be giving the polyester from chem craft that doesn't require the MEK. I know it will take longer to cure, but for now, I don't have the pressure of time restraints but I would really like to give the polyester a try.

actually, South-Eastern Ontario is the center point of Canada. Get the map out, and measure it...

Oh, and which polyester product doesn't require MEK?

My father in law bought some polyester from chem craft about 3-4 years ago based on the recommendation from a local guitar maker (Northwood Guitars, he called it polyester varnish) and sprayed his first. I don't remember him having to add any thing to it but I'll get the specs on the product this coming week when we head over there for Christmas. I'll post a pic of the label later.

That is the same stuff I have here. Same stuff that Ted Thompson, David Webber also I think and the Rayco Resophonic guys are using it as well. I haven't tried it yet but talked to Ted a lot about and I have seen his finishes and he really likes it so I will be giving it a try!

I know thw Ontario finishing dude as well and he plans to have the booth working full time doing his line of instruments and contract work so it is good to finally have a Canadian option. But I agree, they are still a WAYS away from us!

If it's polyester, is needs a catalyst. No way around that as far as I know. There's no such thing as a air-curing polyester.
