has anyone used this stuff on a guitar? it requires their vinyl sealer as well - Can anyone comment on using this?  is it compatible with Z-poxy or system three as a pore filler? 

Used it years ago. Never used their sealer, but instead of shellac...

Was good lacquer, a bit more prone to crazing than McFadden's, but good.

No can help with epoxy....

Same as Mario, I've used it, great lacquer, just seal with shellac, don't spend the $$ on their vinyl sealer.

Also, don't think there would be any issues with it over epoxy, but I've not tried it so I can't say for sure.

I should mention that in Canada, its sold as Mohawk, the mfr .... resold as Behlens in the US thru SM.

You don't need their vinyl sealer. What they should say is IF you want to use a lacquer-based sealer, then use the vinyl sealer. Vinyl sealer is lacquer based sealer--i.e., lacquer with stearate, plus vinyl. The stearate makes it sand better than plain lacquer. The vinyl does this, too, and problably gets better adhesion to the topcoat and improved flexibility over plain lacquer sanding sealer. But you don't have to use any sealer, and shellac works fine. The finishing companies are a bit misleading about sealers; they try to give the impression that you must use a particular sealer, when really sealers reduce adhesion and clarity. They are there if you want to sand again before the topcoat, which can speed production in commercial shops by eliminating some earlier sanding.

Word I heard (haven't used it) is that Behlens instrument lacquer dries a bit softer than MacFaddens. But it works well.

I actually found the Behlen's/Mohawk harder and easier to buff than the McFadden's. But as I said, it was more prone to cracking/crazing in temperature swings. I actually liked it for that reason...

Hey! I thought you were outa' here! Glad you're stickin' around. We need to balance out all those pretty little happy posts.

So if it is more prone to checking then is it safe to assume there are less
plasticizers in it, compared to the McFadden's? Howard said he heard it
cures a bit softer but Grumpy says it's harder. Personally I think it's a good
sign if an instrument checks after years. I wish there was a way to chemically
run a test and compare this stuff.

I asked an old luthier friend of mine a couple of weeks ago if there is any
nitro on the market that is similar to the "old formula" that Gibson had used
during their "golden age". He said it's impossible because of the EPA. He
didn't elaborate much after that.

I use the Behlen's for all of my guitars. It comes ready to spray, so there is no mixing or thinning required. I get a good even coat every time. It buffs easy too. I normally get it from stewmac, but I'll have to look into buying it in gallons from Mohawk. Thanks for the tip!

oh yeah, no vinyl sealer needed... it goes on good over zpoxy.
