The day finally came when factory reps were in town along with their
discounts. After talking about the different bandsaws in Jet's lineup, the
rep told me the 14" open stand would be fine for my foreseeable uses.
After pricing them all out, after the various discounts, the 14" Deluxe was
the same price out the door. I went with the 14" Deluxe.

I'll pick it up on tuesday. A few things looked better than the other 14"
(which was strangely only $10 more than the 12").

- Quick release belt tension
- Heavier 9 spoke tracking wheels
- Twice the horsepower

The discounting structure was strange. Each saw was 10% off regardless
because the reps were there. The Deluxe was already discounted a good
bit and came with an additional $50 coupon for later use.

The open stand 14" was not on sale and didn't come with the coupon.
With a fence and mobile base, it came to the same price as the Deluxe
with a fence. The coupon will make the mobile base $20 when I pick it up
on Tuesday, which gave the Deluxe a real world price that was only $20
more. A no brainer.

I wanted to post in order to update everyone who helped me in my
previous thread and thank them for helping me learn a bit before making
the final decision. Thanks all!

Bruce buddy what the cup does is permit the dust extraction that is happening in the lower wheel area to be transfered to just under the blade slot on the table.  It actually then makes any dust on the table and near the slot get sucked into the vac.  So the cup is duct work so-to-speak and it improved the dust collection of my Jet 12" many times over since the dust was not reaching the lower wheel chamber.

It works great and take 10 seconds to install and there is nothing to ever empty.  Now if you tilt your table it won't work.....

Thanks, guys. Yesterday it was still of a bit of shock (this is the largest
and most expensive purchase yet), but now it's setting in and I'm really
happy. Lonnie Bird, author of The Bandsaw Book, also has a bandsaw
DVD that I'm going to pick up as well to help with setup. Though I
remember Hesh say Jet's instructions were so good that his saw ran
perfectly from the get go, so I might try them first.

Hesh, I need to pick your brain about the plastic cup a bit more. And
Todd, that looks really useful. They have bins fillled with different dust
collector attachments.

Bruce, I'll get pics up once I get the saw going. It probably won't be until
the weekend. This looks to be a packed week for me with a few extra
teaching assignments to make up the cash I'm also meeting with a
principal about a permanent position.

Ok, some breakfast and I'm off to Santa Cruz to watch these waves they'e
been talking about. (My version of seeing Half Dome since I've seen Half
Dome so many times.)

James my Jet needed to be set up and all the guides and bearings adjusted as well.  But it was easy and the instructions are indeed pretty good.  But it was not set-up out of the box.

Hey everyone

I picked the saw up today and assembled it. There's nothing like moving
a 150 box by yourself. Every now and then I wish I had a dolly, but, well,
I'm young, right?   

I also bought and watched Mastering Your Bandsaw by Mark
Guginske. It was a good DVD with a lot of technique tips and setup
sections. It covered setting the guides, aligning the wheels, but nothing
regarding blade tension, which I was really hoping for. He said to set
your blade tension to the saw's recommended tension for the blade
width. I've read that most saws are woefully wrong in regards to this. I'll
check YouTube for blade tensioning clips.

The coolest thing I picked up from the DVD was a way to use the saw with
a pattern the way a router can do the same with a pattern or flush trim
bit. This will be extremely useful since my first project with it is to make
molds and spreaders.

I'm going skating in Yosemite this saturday, so I won't get to setting it
likely until sunday afternoon. And then to cutting on Monday. I'll take
some pics then.

Awwww I am so jealous!  James - congrats on the new saw!  Do I see a pictoral tutorial on set-up in your plans?

Have fun in Yosemite.  I'll be sufferin' in the 75+ deg heat and 85% RH in Houston working on my rent house! 

The highest vista around here is the cloverleaf on the Beltway.
