My father passed away a little over a year ago, so I decided to do an inlay
of him in his honor on one of my current electric builds. He grew up a
Nebraska boy and went to the University of, so the bloodwood seems
pretty appropriate. Thanks for looking. I think he'd be proud.

Excellent work, very neat and quite bold on the bloodwood.

Play on.

Fantastic. I'm sure he'd be tickled pink with that, and mighty proud of his son.

Mike,

You did a great job. I'm sure that he would be proud of the job just as you should be.

Mike, that looks great! I know it has been said but that is truly a great tribute to your Dad. No doubt he is smiling from above right now. Art is supposed to communicate a message and/or emotion...you have succeeded in doing both.

Would you be interested in elaborating on how this was done? How do
you get such fine detail and get the look of a certain individual? Do you
work with a photo? Just curious, as i've never done any inlay work.

Steve, I started with a photo I liked, and then I manipulated it in
photoshop, erasing and "drawing" in various areas. A good portion of it I
cut out with the saw, but the finer areas I engraved and filled in with
black filler, like his eyes and gum line.

Mike, I hope you'll post a Snider Method sorta tutorial one day on one of your inlays.
Again, very nice work on an excellent tribute.

Here's the original (not long before he died)

And then the design part way through, although I did end up changing
things a little more, and took the liberty of making him look younger.

Thanks, j. That's a good idea. I'll try to remember to take pictures
throughout the process next time.

Mike, that really is a wonderful tribute to your dad, so nicely done.

My dad is a grad of Univ. of Nebraska, I was born in Nebraska and I've been thinking about doing the same thing.  He passed away many years ago so he'll be a younger man in the inlay (younger than I am now, if fact) but you really inspired me to get going.  Think I'll give it a try.  Good job and thanks for the inspiration.

Bruce
