Hello everyone. I've never posted before on this forum, because my main interest is in building solid-body electric basses and it seems that the OLF is mostly about acoustic guitars. But I've lurked for quite a long time because guitars of any sort interest me. In fact I did make one classic and one dreadnaught but that was about 35 years ago. Can you imagine? No internet, no computers, only 2 books on the subject and no-one to ask!
But, much as I like to browse on the OLF I always get frustrated because it seems so slow. Am I doing something wrong, or is there something wrong with my computer?
I should explain. I click on OLF in my 'favourites' and the main page opens straight away. I click on 'main discussion forum' and it takes about 10 seconds to open. Opening a topic can take 10 to 15 seconds but, once I've read it, I click on the 'back' button and it can take anything from 15 seconds up to a minute (!) to get back to the list of discussions.
I regularly look at, and subscribe to several other forums and none of them have this problem. Is it me?

Dave, I don't have that problem but maybe some others might chime in.
Good luck and welcome to the OLF!

Hi, Dave-
Welcome to the OLF!

I just duplicated your 'procedure' (Main Discussion- topic- back) and got the same thing you've noticed- 10-15 seconds delay.

I hadn't noticed this before- I usually click on the Active Topics link, then right-click the topics I'm interested in to open them in a new tab (Firefox) or window (IE). This seems a bit quicker, or perhaps I don't notice the delay because everything is opened by the time I try to read the messages.

The OLF software is due for an 'upgrade' soon- so that may help.

I built guitars as a hobby from '76-82, then 'quit' until a year ago. So I know about being a 'builder' in the 'olden days' as well!

Cheers
John

It doesn't seem too slow to me either, but we have a new system coming up before too long.  That should cut down on some of the bottlenecks that we have now.

Welcome to the OLF, by the way.

As with John I go through "Active Topics" and don't find it slow at all.

Maybe the way you are going into the site causes a lot of other unnessesary stuff to load

It has been a little slow for me the past couple of days. I have dsl so its not that bad. But it seems to be lagging.

I prefer multiple tabs. Open the first tab on either main discussion, active topics or search results. Open specific topics in new tabs. That way your browser doesn't continually reload the main page.

Thanks for your replies and your welcome everyone. I hadn't thought about opening topics in new tabs (I'm rather an IT dunce)and it is obviously much quicker that way. The only downside seems to be that topics you've read don't get highlighted as 'already read'.
Also if you just click on Active Topics it doesn't list a new topic that hasn't yet had an answer. Which might be why the question I asked in the General Luthiery section seems to be sliding rapidly down the list with no answers.

I have always had great delays on OLF, regardless of search path. I have highspeed cable and a newer computer. The delays are annoying, but the information is worth it.

Yes it has always been that way for me too.  I do the right click then open in a new window thing.  That way I can dump that window when I am done reading  and be right back to the topic list without any delays.

You think this is slow,  you should have been here during the opening hours of the swap meet last month!
