zach, i agree. maybe they just have their own little niche and so you dont hear about them too often, but i feel like they are such an under rated band. i have seen "im trying to break your heart" and caught them on austin city limits a couple of times. they have a great sound though.

Tweedy's Sunken Treasure's might be my favorite concert DVD. He's got quite a nice acoustic guitar collection, too.

You dont hear about them often, but with the VW commercials, people now hear them often.  Even if they dont know it.  As discussed in the movie, they are one of those great bands that everyone thinks the next record is going to be there big break.  On the other hand, they havent been ruined by the marketing machine like a lot of other bands.  They were developed by a strong fan base in the same sort of way DMB built up.  Wilco just never got anyware as popular as Dave, but I think this is what has allowed both to last.  Similar to the way were still listening and discussing a lot of the band listed above from 30-40 years ago.  You dont see that as much now.

Jeff has a lot of nice vintage guitars.  Just look at the cover of the DVD.  The only new guitar I've ever seen him with is Santa Cruz OOO.  I wonder if he has any boutique guitars.  Anyone out there built one for him???

not that it matters all that much, but his last performance on ACL, he was playing a revival series breedlove.

Y'all are aware of the Audio Archive project (archive.org), right? There are some great live music recordings there (legal bootleg, shall we say), not sure if Nickel Creek's on there alone, but they've got a few very nice gigs with Glen Phillips (frontman of Toad the Wet Sprocket).

Aaanyway, live acts I've seen that are in my top 5:

1) Ben Folds - fantastically energetic show, great tunes, great performer
2) Dave Matthews - saw him solo with Tim Reynolds earlier this year in a small venue. Would love to see the full band, though, but they never tour here
3) Josh Ritter - caught him on his last tour, top-notch alt.country
4) Jason Mraz - catch him live, preferably without full band (bongos and bass, that works great, or just him on guitar).
5) Tommy Emmanuel - 'nuff said, really. Going to see him again in a few weeks, hopefully.

The band that almost makes the list is the Counting Crows - when they're great, they're great, but Adam Duritz can get a little too lazy on the vocals sometimes. Saw one absolutely fantastic show, and one merely very good show.

Nickel Creek's very high on my list of 'want to see them live', ditto Alison Kraus (preferably with Jerry Douglas, too...have a great live set recording of that), ditto Ryan Adams (but only solo, in a small venue, and if he's not too drunk to stand...)
