Laquer over enamel?

If a kid who sprayed his "standby" guitar with Home Depot type enamel wants it "shiny" now, can I spray laquer over it and buff it out for him? Or is there a compatibility issue? It's a Squire Stagemaster...not expensive, and it doesn't look too bad right now, just flat as opposed to glossy...it'd be a favor to him and kind of a pain for me, but if it's possible to shoot it with nitro I suppose I'll do it for him...

Traditionally, you can put enamel over lacquer but if you try to put lacquer over enamel it will attack the finish like paint stripper.

And, of course, it all depends on the definition of "enamel"...which is kind of like "varnish". It could be practically anything.

Lacquer will eat up oilbased enamel! If he got it from HD then that's probably what your looking at! Enamel over enamel is OK!

Try a polyurathane clear finish. I have done this when i was a young teen building my frankenstein strats built from parts. The poly worked well over the enamels that i used to buy from the Pepboys auto supply.
