Hi,

Boy am I glad to have stumbled onto this forum!  So this is where you guys all hang out now....

Years ago, I participated in the rec.music.makers.builders newsgroup, but I have lost track of those times and those posts.  I'm a materials scientist by day and a hobby-level builder (electric only), so I can only promise to try not to be a leech.  Most of my learning is still ahead of me, and what little I already know has mostly come by making mistakes!

I was able to buy a 7-string CJ from Dave Wendler this year.  It's good to see that he's represented here.  It's also nice to see Al Carruth (still making those folk violas, I hope?).  Does David Hurd come around as well?  Tim White?

I'll leave my building questions for another time.  My main interests lean toward hand-applied finishes and the application of composite materials.

-Ben

There was a great thread on just that a short time ago.  It may not even be in the archives yet.

Welcome to the OLF, Ben.  We're glad to have anyone who's interested in the subject here.  Leeches welcome too.  If you pass along what you learn from your mistakes it will help someone else avoid the pitfalls.

Welcome Ben!

Al does hang out here. I don't see much of David Hurd anywhere online these days - maybe too busy getting stuff done?

I almost forgot to say "thanks" for all the replies.  I wish I had met a few of you while I was in the Ann Arbor area a few years ago!
