Benjamin Zander, Conductor of the Boston Phil and motivational speaker, instructs people to "always remember rule #6."  Rule #6 is "don't take yourself so D*** seriously. 
I've heard other highly successful people say similar things, like "if you're going to make it in this business kid, you gotta be able to laugh at yourself"

I live by that advice (not that I consider myself highly successful.) Especially now. 

Can anyone spot the reason I'm laughing at myself?  It has nothing to do with any of the clutter or tools on the work bench and lies entirely with the  work board and guitar sitting under it.

I closed the box last night.  I've never used a work board before. 
When I took the clamps off this morning, I discovered my problem.

please tell me I'm not the first to make this mistake!

Hmmm. Did the board get glued to your top? Unless it is that I don't have a clue. I am not using a board for my build.

Somehow I've never seen vice-grips in the list of tools needed for luthiers.

I don't use a board or build classicals, but I did see someone do this. and they admitted it on a forum.

So, what's the answer for next time?

It WAS the soundboard clamp.

And We're all winners, because if you read this, then it probably won't happen to you.  Handy is that whole concept of learning from other's mistakes.

Hah .. Bill Moll has you all beat ... he asked once if anyone knew how to get internal spreaders out thru F holes !!!

You guessed it, he had to take off the back.

You know, a vacuum solera might be fantastic. You could build in the arch of the top, have perfect stability with no clamps in the way, etc., etc.

Good that you can laugh at yourself Dave,instead of smashing it against the wall. Glad you got the bolt out without having to drill or ruin your workboard. I'll bet this has happened to a lot of us .

My old Solera was ripe for this problem.....the thumbscrew which held the soundboard in place had to be removed before the back went on.

Thankfully I always remembered to do it....however, now that I'm getting older (and revamping my fixturing) I'm building a new Solera which will be "foolproof" (that would be me) as far as getting the top

support out. (hint: don't make this support too long either.....) <GRIN>

I've done something similar before... boxed up a body and left both waist
length and lower bout spreaders in. They don't fit back out through the
shoundhole, but after a couple hours I managed to get them out through a
end pin hole... I'm glad I used quarter inch rods that fit out through the
hole....
