I have been out of the astronomy thing for a while now, but my kids are hounding me to get a telescope. I just can't bring myself to buy the low end junk, and I don't want to shell out the big bucks for a commercial SC unit.

I built a dobsonian while I was in college but I sold it. I was thinking I could work with the kids to build another and was looking at mirrors on ebay.

Anybody have any experience with these inexpensive mirrors? This company seems to sell these designs in 10", 12" and 18".

Ebay Auction for a 18" Mirror

I know it's involved, but why don't you make one with the kids instead?[1] Seems a much richer learning experience.[2]

Good idea, but my (older) kids are 5 and 7.

They are both all about space stuff though. I thought the idea of building a scope could be fun for them (to mostly watch and bring me tools), plus we could end up with a lot more scope for the $
