Happened to stumble across this link for information on requirements for all types of jobs and careers, so I looked up luthier. They didnt exactly describe luthier using that word, but they came up with a "Custom precision woodworker - musical instruments"

Thought some of you might like to have a look at what is required. You may even get a good laugh as well

Hey, I can do that!

Hmmmm, I didn't see anything about chewing gum in there.  I can walk, and I can chew gum, but when they are together, there is questionable dexterity.    And what do guitar builders do that requires the use of one leg and one arm while lying down?  I really want to know.

Well, if you REALLY want to know, it's one of the methods to make a longer scale neck on a finished instrument...you lie down on the floor, put one foot into the soundhole, wrap one arm around the headstock (in a headlock?) and you stretch the silly thing out until you get the desired scale length. An optional assist is to take the one free arm and grab onto something stationary for added leverage. Oh, and you lie down so as to not fall over while attempting this while standing on the one remaining leg, thereby ruining a perfectly good instrument!

I thought this would be intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer, much less a "seasoned" luthier.

It's for when you've cut an arm and leg off in your unisaw, and so you need to use the remaining arm and leg to drag yourself to the phone and dial 911. Did that last week, and ooohhh did it sting!

And that's the second time I've done that, you'd think I'd have learned the first time. But anyhoo, the typing with a straw in my mouth thing is working out for me.

Well, it was a newbie question anyway.

ok then.... it is to call 911..

lets move on:

33 Physics
Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, and applications including air, water, material dynamics, light, atomic principles, heat, electric theory, earth formations, and meteorological and related natural phenomena

I'm pretty sure this one means that one must know how many soda pops (or beers if you prefer) that one can drink before:

 A) having to make a run to the toilet and while there wonder if when it is flushed it is going to end up in the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, or Gulf of Mexico , or,

B) ripping out one of  those paint peeling flatulations that changes the atmospheric balance of the room and quite possibly ruin the finish on a perfectly good guitar.

I just wish they would come right out and say it without beating around the bush

You see Ron, that's what I didn't realise, it's my knowledge of the Earth's formations that makes me such a gold plated guitar builder.

Now I see it, Geologist Luthier is the rank you attain above Master Luthier. I'll have to run $3500 a week courses in Structural geology for all you poor ignorant guitar builders, at least for those aspiring to greatness!

Aahhhh, Thanks, Colin, that explains a lot. The closest I've come to combining geology with lutherie is to throw rocks at my guitars.

"Young'ns" was in reference to the time in luthery, not necessarily age, as you mentioned it was a "newbie" question.
