Hi All

I thought I would see if anyone is interested in watching the french polish
DVD by Ronald Loius Fernandez ver 2.0? I am willing to send it around like
the guitar book that was being sent around...

I would suggest that nobody make illicit copies of the DVD, and that anyone finding it interesting either buy a copy from Ron or send him some sort of contribution in thanks for his trouble and expense in making this video.   

I'm of the generation that does not think that unauthorized file sharing is cool.

Thank you Rick those who are getting this please do not make a copy .
watch it enjoy it if you really like it buy it...its not to expensive about what
most specialty dvds cost but well worth it in my opinion if you are on the
fence with french polishing this DVD can clarify the process and I like how
unlike other methods some use all you need to use this method is shellac
alcohol and pumice. I like the fact that this method does not use any
toxic chemicals I do recommend this DVD for anyone interested in french
polishing. I live in an apartment and so toxic fumes in my workshop are a
definitely a no no.

Thanks for reminding us of our obligation to respect intellectual property. I too am quite sensitive regarding illegal copies. For several years I have made music Cd's for people but have always purchased the music and the appropriate rights instead of just ripping from other Cd's. I have added myself to the distribution list for this DVD and will pass it on once it has been viewed.

For sure. If I like it and it looks like something I would use I will definitely buy a copy.

I have also been thinking about taking the Brune's class too. Honestly I don't know how much I will French Polish anything .. but it is a skill I would like to have.

Highly recommended... The Fernandez video (I had the VHS version) and the Milburn tutorial both scared me off of French polishing. The Brune method is way more simple and quick. This is the method Robbie O'Brien covers in his finishing DVD.

Hmmm I didn't think it sounded hard just time consuming but isnt every
finish...well any good finish..how does the Brune method differ from the
Fernandez method? I am all for easy if it will give as good a result

Brune's can French polish a guitar in a day if they're in a pinch, though usually they like to take two days. If I remember correctly, Fernandez's finish schedule estimates 40 hours of work over 4-6 weeks (correct me if I'm wrong, I sold the video a while back).

I know different techniques work better for different people so I don't want to knock Ron's or Milburn's or anyone else, and I think you'll find valuable info in studying each. I should also add the disclaimer that I'm not an expert, I've only taken the Brune class and am finally getting around to finishing my first guitar, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I think the main advantage I can see so far is that Brune's use a lighter cut of shellac (less than 1#), you can build faster because the shellac is pretty much dry to the touch right away. You can even sand on it right away if you need to knock off some high spots.

1. Here is the work schedule I presented in the DVD French Polishing
for Guitarmakers 2.0:  1 hour to seal the guitar, 3 to 6+ hours
for filling, 8 to 20 hours for loading, 1 to 3 hours for clearing. I
state that it take 10 to 20 hours to do a Flamenco (cypress back) over
2 to 4 weeks and 18 to 30 hours over 3 to 6 weeks for classical
(rosewood backs). I think doing this work over a few weeks produces the
best results. I show in the video that the shellac is not really hard
until after 72 hours. Before that time it is dry to the touch but still
slightly soft



2. I spoke with Marshall Brune, Richard Brune's son at the 2006 GAL
meeting about french polishing a guitar in a day. He told me that he
could do it in a day if the guitar was prepared and he got up very
early in  the morning and went to bed late.



3. I watched Richard Brune's son present their method of French
Polishing  at the GAL a year ago. One difference was that he used
a commercal filler to fill the pores--I personally use pumice.  I
have tried many methods to fill pores. I chose to show the use of
pumice because I was explaining the traditional method used in Spain
which I had observed at the shops of fine guitarmakers in the 1960's to
1990's. Commercial fillers work fine.



4. In the DVD I suggest using less than a 1 lb cut during sealing and
filling. During early sessions of loading I may use a 1 lb to 1.5 lb
cut   and then I use less than a 1 lb cut in latter session.
As I explain in the DVD I often add alcohol to a pad which has some
shellac in it--the amount of alcohol depends upon the conditions of the
air (temperature and humidity), the condition of the surface (is it
hard or getting gummy?). Since I am continually adding alcohol to the
shellac mixture (in response to my evaluation of the surface condition)
I cannot tell you exactly what the cut is of the shellac. I would say
that it is always a thin cut (less than one pound) which is actually
being applied to the guitar. The important thing to understand here is
that

you vary the alcohol/shellac mixture according to the air conditions
and condition of the surface. As a rule I would say that a thin cut is
always better than a thick cut.



5. It is nice to know that my DVD is of interest to a number of
luthiers so much that they want to share it. It is legal to share
viewing of a single DVD however it is a violation of copyright to make
copies of such a DVD. If you like the DVD it would be nice for you to
purchase one so I can continue to make DVD's on other projects.



6. You should check my website about the 16 grades of shellac I have
imported. There are several pages there which explain about the colors
of shellacs.



7. I have recently completed a 19 month reediting of the Classical and
Flamenco Guitarmaking with Benito Huipe: Extended DVD Version. It is 80
minutes longer than the 1994 video tape version. See my website for

WOW!  Thank you for that, and Welcome to the OLF.  We are sponges here, and love the input of an expert in his field.  I have the VHS tape, and probably will upgrade to a DVD one of these days.  I think I bought it from Jon.  There have been lots of discussions about not copying products, but buying them, and I think most of us are in agreement on that issue.

WOW welcome! I enjoyed your dvd especially because you showed a method
that did not use a host of chemicals to do the finish (initially why I liked the
french polish method) I waited till your video came out on dvd before I
bought it so am glad to here your guitar making video is coming out on dvd
