Is it ok to spray vinyl sealer over epoxy pore fill? I use a final wash coat of epoxy when finished with pores. Finish will be nitro.

Mike

I usually spray nitro directly on top of epoxy. Vinyl sealer doesn't adhere as well as nitro does to most things and has less clarity so I don't use it, but as long as the epoxy has cured (week?) it should be O.K.

Hi Mike,
I self seal the top with nitro. It is close grained and doesn't need any pore filling and I don't use epoxy on it (sometimes epoxy fill the rosette if it is porous material)

While you do not need the sealer it won't hurt. I would use the recommended sealer for the finish from the same manufacturer.

Its Mohawk (Behlen) sealer, for the Mohawk nitro. Think I'll just spray the top. Brian, did you mean "while u don't need" ?

I have never used Mohawk nitro, I use the Cardinal LuthierLac stuff and their vinyl sealer. I always try to use finish and undercoat from the same manufacture as you have done.

The only thing I can add is with Cardinal, it bonds much better if you spray the sealer (over cured epoxy or bare wood) and then follow up in 30-60 minutes with the first top coat. I suppose my point is it is best to follow the manufacturer recommendations.

I’ve done it without any issues over Z Poxy & over West Systems 105/207
