To summarize - a stepped hole is fine but unnecessary. Correct?

The reason for the initial post was I went to the StewMac site and instead of multi step instructions and tool recommendations like most of the other tuners it just says “needs a 10mm hole” for the mini 510s. :)

That's right not necessary and I'll add again you increase your risk of a mishap by adding unnecessary operations that provide zero value... to anyone but beyond that if the risks are accepted go for it it's a very good example of Lutherie forum life and real Loofier working in the trade life not being the same thing.

By the way Gotoh would never sell another tuner if they got behind the idea that you need $75+ in tools (if you have nothing)(what's a drill cost now I use Festool so I only have to buy every 20 years....) to instal a stinking tuner. Replacement sales are not something that they want to walk away from.

I'll also add that lots of makers use the minis as OEM tuners. None of them step, again not a one.
