We also have a drawer full of full sized files that have had wooden handles attached to them and they look just like giant ones of what I've pictured.

We use those to mill in fall-away when a lot of material has to be removed.

Fender style bolt on necks are notorious for developing a ski-ramp on the over the body frets. We tape one end of large files with a wooden handle and then take the fall-away out of play completely for uber low action players AND to repair defective instruments with too much ski-ramping to permit normal action or bends or both.

Anyway having topic creep here so forgive me please :). Up at 3:00 AM again and off to work we are so busy.

That's a good idea too thanks JF. The beams are great for all manner of stuff I use mine which are not SM we make our own I use mine for sanding the bottom of a saddle, saddle sides, nut bottoms and lots of stuff that a mini surface plate would be useful.

Well dang! Why didn't I think of that? Yeah I love the beam, so useful in many ways. Next nut and saddle I do I'll be using the beam!

As promised pics of other files we make with handles and we use these mostly for fret work too to hog off lots of material fast and milling in fall-away on fender bolt on style necks.

As Chris said make sure your files are flat to be suitable for this.

Looks like two layers of tape? Depending on brand I guess we’re talking .004” to .006” fallaway.

Yep Josh and Steve got it right. Some tape on one end and then keeping the tape approx. over the 12th fret and you can mill in fall-away from the 12th to the last.

You can do the same thing with short sanding beams but files are capable of faster material removal.

I use a short beam with p120 to mill in the initial fall away. It goes pretty quick and doesn’t take long to clean it up to 320 which is where I start the polishing process for all the frets with400, 600, 800, etc.
