For those of you that do bolt on necks, do you prefer one or two bolts. I've been using the inserts from Lmi. They're an 8-32 threading.

Whats your spacing from the top?

For a uke, one bolt is plenty. I place it around 2/3 way down from the fretboard.

The adjustable neck on the Stauffer guitar copy I made only has one bolt. The joint fits tight. Where's it gonna go? It might have a 10-32, I don't remember. Brass insert with the sharp threads on the outside.

It is about 2/3's down too.

I use two 1/4-20 bolts. 8-32 seems a bit small to me. I think only one of those would be a bit risky.

Edit: Are you sure they are 8-32? I was looking at the LMII website and they are listed as quarter inch bolts.

Yes but... string tension back then was much less than today. This was before steel strings so much less tension.

A couple of other points I'd like to make.

I also used 1/4" and they seemed about right, two of them.

And folks such as Dave and I get asked to add a strap button to someone's guitar daily it is perhaps, perhaps the single most common request after someone buys a guitar to add a strap button.

We like them 1/3 of the way down from the fret board surface to the bottom of the heel. With this said some small builders don't consider this and their bolts are in the way.... The major producers all take strap buttons into account or at least their bolt spacing does not interfere with a strap button conventionally located.

I use two 10-24 hex head bolts with brass washers into 3/8" diameter barrel nuts in the tenon.

If you haven't seen it, this older thread has some discussion related to this: http://luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=54727&hilit=bolt+spacing
