For those of you experienced with 2k finish, how do you guys control finish thickness so it doesn’t become too thick and make the guitar sound bad? I just painted a Cajon I’m making with 2k and I made 100cc of finish, 50cc of hardener and 50cc of reducer. I sprayed 3 coats total onto bare wood which uses up the entire mix but since I wasn’t sure the first time how to spray it, I had some runs on a side. I waited a day to cure and sanded it down with 400 grit and sprayed 3 more coats, and this time I waited 5 minutes between coats for the previous coat to become tacky. This time the finish is flawless and looks like I can sand it with 600 and then buff and I should be good.

Question is, how do I control film thickness? How much 2k finish do you use to do a single guitar?

Final films should be under 5mils with most systems.

You have to calculate it out based on measured wet coat thickness and percentage of solids as sprayed. I explain it here https://howardguitars.blogspot.com/2015/06/spray-gun-setup-technique-by-brian.html
The process is the same even though the material I use in the article is a little different.

I never really figured how many mils my finish was, I used to use nitro and with that the finish just shrinks infinitely so even if I sprayed 9 coats total the finish thickness was never very thick. But I'm told 2k builds much more per coat compared to nitro... so the question is, how much?

It also cures much faster too... it's already fully cured in 24 hours.

So I had an accident with the Cajon...

I had it standing up on some cardboard box (because I'm so afraid of scratching it) and the dang thing toppled over, denting a corner. Now the paint scratched off there.

I noticed it wasn't very thick either.

So can anyone tell me how is it Fender and various Asian guitar makers are putting on 1/16" thick coat of 2k? Are they spraying 10+ coats on it?

Those .060"+ thick finishes are not 2K, not even urethane.... They are polyester. Completely different system and product.
