Got a recent USA Gibson in for a fret dress. 9 frets are high in places, 2nd fret is all high. No sign of fret wear at all.
Thought all USA Gibson were supposed to be PLEK'd?

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Well, Colin - hard to beat a trained, experienced luthier who can actually think compared to a clueless button-pusher running a machine.

As Brian said, it is a tool and only as good as the operator. I know a guy here who has one and is able to do some amazing stuff with it. But he had the experience of doing hundreds of fret jobs before he bought it.

I'd bet whoever is running them at Gibson has only been trained to put the guitar in the machine and press the button.

It does make me wonder about the quality control department and the people who do the final inspection? Assuming those things exist at Gibson...

Based on my experience, Gibson works hard to make sure their guitars need a full setup right out of the factory. I, for one, appreciate it, provides a fair amount of work for my bench. Of course, Gibson isn't alone.
