I just bought this unit off of Amazon.ca for $60 Cdn. Heats up like right away! Seems great so far. I also have a Weller knockoff that I probably paid the same for and both are a world of difference compared to the $15-$20 pencil irons you get at Home Hardware or Radio Shack.

Good luck

Actually there is a tougher spec for soldering than any MIL-spec and it's NASA certification. NASA soldering certification begins with and requires MIL-spec certification but takes things much further. NASA certified techs are the gold standard of the electronics industry in so much as every single solder joint that these folks do WILL have someone's life depending on it.

When I was younger I supervised an aerospace group that had been part of Bendix Aerospace before we bought them. Several of my people were NASA certified and it was a very big deal too, not easy to obtain and it really required the "touch" to earn this credential.

Dave's right about the JBC station and although he won't let me use it.... :) from what I've seen this thing takes soldering to a whole new level. What's most impressive about the thing is it's ability like a cell phone to sense what it's up against and boost power automatically and nearly instantly as well. It's darn near idiot proof in respect to how much of a heat sink what we are soldering may be.

These days when I come to work its often the case that Dave has soldered my tools together so I know fist hand that he is enjoying the JBC!
