I'm going to put this here as well as in the repair/reno section, as that one doesn't seem to get lots of views...

I've been asked to refinish an Orville LP/sunburst in black. I have no qualms about the finishing, but preparation.

I've searched for a thread or two that may answer my questions, but haven't found one yet. Question is, what needs to be done to the poly finish on the guitar? Does it need to be stripped back to bare wood? scuffed for adhesion? another option?

Thanks for any thoughts.....

If the finish is solid and not cracking or peeling it can be left as a base. Fill any chips or dings and prep sand at no finer than 320. Depending on the finish you are putting over it you may need a tie or bond coat of some type.

Thanks for your input Brian. I talked him out of it. Told him if he wanted a black LP, sell this one and buy a blackie.....These go for around a grand down here, so a refin=500-600. Not worth it....

Set up and a new set of strings it is....

Cheers.
