Hi there I have a rosewood guitar body into which someone (not me!) has tried to fit a Dunlop recessed strap lock. Unbelievably they have drilled one of the holes way off centre and it is also irregular (see photo)
Well, advice on what to do would be very welcome. My idea is to fill the hole with a sacrificial piece of wood (or epoxy it ) then drill it out oversize and fit a contrasting plug of wood dead centre, perhaps ebony, then re-drill the hole for the insert. The strap lock would then have a neat little ring of ebony around it. I am wondering what type of drill and plug cutter to use to get a really clean cut? Is a brad point ok?

Hi I would use a a Forsynet bit to drill out the hole and if you can get it under a drill press and clamp it down then yhou would not even need to plug the hole first.

Tapered plug cutters are the best and are available at many better woodworking suppliers. Rather than use a drill press which will be difficult to say the least.. Make a guide block by drilling a hole in a piece of wood with the bit you will use and then clamp that over the buggered up hole and it will pilot the bit in for you.

Hey thanks for the advice folks. The jig idea is interesting as I don't think it will be easy to clamp the body at an angle underneath a drill press. When you say plug cutter Brian are you talking about one of these claw types?
