I think the true mahogs really open up at a higher RH.
The wax potting melts at different temperatures,
so, ya don't want to leave an electric guitar in the car trunk on a hot day.
I've noticed the parafin wax melts at 98 degrees f.,
and the beeswax melts at 101 degrees f.
Something to think about.
The beeswax definitely has more of a "hum" to it.

I tend to stay clear of arguments over tone. It is like arguing over which is better, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, rocky road, tuti-fruti, or (add your favorite here if it hasn't been mentioned yet). And this discussion is even more dangerous, we are now trying to determine who makes the best chocolate, Hershey's, Nestle's, M&M Mars........

Clearly, vanilla is the best flavor. I think it's obvious. And chocolate? Cadbury. Easily.

And guy's, hate to break it to you but the tone of your guitar has nothing to do with potting wax. New research determines that all tone comes from the color and shade of your hair. As for me, I'm stocking up on color changing hair dyes. I'll have the most tone out of all of ye!

This whole wax change thing reminds me of the Coca-Cola plot to replace real sugar with corn juice.
I'm a Pepsi guy now.
The old beeswax pickups will become coveted and expensive. Just like 50-year old capacitors, "vintage" wire, and really crummy opamps used in Tube Screamers.
Usually new and improved means cheaper.
Sorry, I'm old and just had to complain.

Both Pepsi and Coke switched to high fructose corn syrup in the early 80's. It's cheaper than sugar.

I'd like to learn how to build my own pups.

Before running in blind it would be cool to hear
the low-down from any experienced folks and I'd appreciate it...I am
serious about it.

I just made my first set of pickups, took me a while to get it down, and I still didnt wrap them tight enough. But they work and I can deal with that.

hmmm...well....dunno about crummy opamps, but long ago I read an article in Guitar Player magazine where the lead guitarist for 38 Special detailed how he used a Tube Screamer as a pre for his Marshall stack (turns out this is what a Tube Screamer is really all about...making tubes scream...it's a very crappy distortion pedal)...I tried that out since I had (still have) one and had pretty much relegated it as being worthless...WOW...that sucker makes an AWESOME pre for distortion...kinda of like dual rectifying...I've tried various other distortion pedals for this and none hold a candle to what the ol' Tube Screamer does....

as far as the subject of this thread...one thing I find interesting is that when people start talking about electric guitars they rarely seem to take into account how they act when played at high volumes...I can easily see how bee's wax would have a different effect than paraffin, and heck I bet it might be a good thing according to the player...

I'm sure some discerning snob like Eric would hear it in an instant (and yeah, I rather hate the limp wristed pr!ck)

I'm not one of those people with extraordinary hearing, I have trouble hearing 50 cents difference in pitch.
I do believe people with better hearing exist, but I have NO IDEA how much better.
Can anyone hear the difference between parrafin and beeswax? I BELIEVE it's possible, but I'd have to see some pretty convinceing blind test data to accept that it actually happens.

Get the Jason Lollar book Basic Pickup Winding it details how to build your own p/u winding machine and how to do several different types of p/u's and the ideas behind winding different types etc... where to get materials etc available through his website I believe...
I have a copy and its really the best Ive seen - I guess there are a couple others now - but another classic is Animal Magnetism for Musicians although its not as good as Lollars...

I did not mean to slam the Tube Screamer - I own one. It rocks!
People will dish out $20.00 for an old original JRC 4588 op-amp used in the original Screamer.
These op-amps are noisy with lots of hiss.
