Beautiful work. I like that vacuum press. Can you tell me what kind of blade you put in your scroll saw for cutting out the cavity cover?

Ya had me confused there for a bit.
Then I read you used a veneer over the spruce.
Very interesting.
I see you are going with your grain matched cavity cover.
So that's how ya do it!!
That veneer is awesome, looks alive with movement.
I would have kept that knot in the body wood on the back though.....

I seem to be attracted to ALL the jigs I have seen you post and am actually putting together my fret slot saw jig(Sorry to go off topic slightly) for my table saw and I was curious as to what you are using for your miter slot rails on the jig shown above? I have some scrap mahogany flooring that is one of the most stable woods I have had in my possession in the journey of acquired woods over the last year and was thinking of using that.

I love what you just posted - I made the neck pocket jig after yours and used mostly exotic woods (That were mostly donated to me) because I couldn't afford birch plywood/ locally purchased maple, etc. LOL

You can spot black & white ebony, padauk and bloodwood, mahogany, etc. on the jig I made - hehehe

I finally purchased some birch plywood a couple months back

I like you jigs Fillipo. I would build one like this for myself except I don't have a table saw. I am currently shaping my fretboards using a template on my router table.

Your sled is far more flexible. My router method requires a different template for each fretboard shape, and if I want to account for bindings, then that is another (set of) template(s).

Fortunately I'm only building a couple of guitars a year, and the one template I have is working for me for now.

The template I'm using also doubles for drilling locating dowels (it has two 1/8" id drill bushings). It's actually just a CNC'd fretboard I bought from John Watkins when he was selling guitar stuff online. It was a 'second'. I sanded the radius off of it and put the drill bushings in. It serves multiple purposes.

You can't see it, but the bit is a bearing guided pattern bit. The fretboard is an LMI product, pre-slotted and radiused to 16'. I lined up the centerline and attached it with double sided tape. I cut it close on the bandsaw and then zip the rest off with the router.


One of these days I'll make room in the shop for a tablesaw and work up a jig similar to yours.

Let us know how that Katalox polishes. And describe the surface if you would. Looks like it might have large pores. Not that it matters much but I'm curious.

Seems like I read about that wood on a wood supplier website somewhere and it sounded interesting. I use cocobolo but I kind of like that even color and would like a browner choice for certain combinations.

Also saw some "brown ebony" that looked pretty homogenous and rock hard...it was like $10 a board foot and the guy had a ton if it. The color was a yuck lightish brown but I wondered if it could be dyed black enough to create a decent faux ebony.

I am really digging your fret board binding. If you had not said anything, I would have thought it was a CNC'd board with faux binding. Beautiful work so far. Can't wait to see how it finishes up!
