My 10 YO son played a new Fender Ashbory electric bass this weekend. Now he wants to build one, maybe an acoustic, not sure yet. Anyone done one?

I'm wondering about sources for the pickup.

Pat

Pat,

https://www.largesound.com/buy/

Half way down the page is the pickup/bridge. It appears they have everything you need except the wood.

Hi Pat,

Ive just purchased all the goodies for such a bass myself. Were you planning to post the build? This will be my first electric build so Im curious how another would handle it. Im probably going to get into it over Christmas.

Sebastian,

It will be my first electric too, probably around the same time, though we'll be travelling then. I was waffling between the electric and acoustic, but settled on the electric after looking at the Lutiao Mottola web site. I'd prefer the acoustic myself, but I don't think it would have enough cool factor for my son. [headinwall]

Hi Pat, I'd be interested in seeing your Ashbory build too. What sort of form it will take, etc. You probably noticed there is also a forum on the Largesound site. Not much in the way of luthery but one or two interesting posts.

I started a version of an Ashbory Mk II about 4 years ago and when it was almost finished I got distracted by another project and it never got finished. I must get back to it.

Did you notice you can also get the special tuners, the preamp, nut, etc. from Largesound? All very cheap but if you want quality tuners you can get special Hipshots from Owen Holt at Roadtoad Music.

I'm also tempted to build a version of the Kala U-bass ukulele, baritone uke size and manufactured by Kala in cosultation with Owen Holt. Although perhaps your son doesn't think ukulele are cool either.
