So i am pretty much done my homemade light bulb heated bending press. now im looking for the steel slats you need to make it all work. just wondering where did everyone get theirs? i couldn't find them on stewmac or lmi unless they were connected to a 300+ dollar bending press. now from what ive read i need 5"X35" 24 gauge stainless is this correct? if i know exactly what i need i may be able to find it for cheaper than buying it form a Luthier supply place.

Most of us plobably made our own benders and it's a good bet we got the metal slats from John Hall at Blues Creek Guitars.

The slats are 6" wide, not 5".

Paul…I get mine from a local metal fabrication shop. If you are lucky they may have some scrap and sell it to you for a minimal charge.

A set from me is $52 , and this is where it can get confusing. Not all metal slats are created equal. There are different alloys out there. Some are softer than others. I use a tempered stainless steel and I also carry spring steel. The tempered stainless is my personal choice. It stays reasonable flat and can be bent if it gets over used , Softer stainless will bend like crazy and will be too soft . The proper gauge is also important. Too thin and you won't get the support and too think, it will act like a heat sink and the added spring back won't get you a good bend.
Things to think about when ordering parts. Not all things are the same. Alloys are the key. Find the right one for your needs. Stainless can come in a number of alloys. Not all of them can be heat treated and tempered
