I have an acoustic electric with a mahogany neck that is broken, with the grain, from just above the nut to about the third fret. My question,which I know has probably been asked here before but I could not find, is what is the best glue to use for this repair. I have been told Hide Glue is not recommended for neck repair. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd be concerned about taking much advice from whoever told you that.

Hide glue is probably the most widely recommended glue for that, and what I use on the majority of my neck and headstock repairs. Depending on the crack, sometimes epoxy can be better, and PVA glues are perfectly acceptable as well in most cases.

Well, I may be showing my ignorance here but.. I have had great success with Titebond II for neck repairs. Maybe it's just what works for me. I like the time I have to get everything clamped down, adjusted and tightened. The plus side on the hide glue however, is that if you make a mistake you can heat it to get it loose and start over.

You meant liquid premixed hide rather than HOT HIDE GLUE

I want to thank you so much for the advice. I bought some Titebond and did the repair. The fit was perfect. I used a lacquer stick to touch-up the top of the peg head, sanded and polished it, and touched up the finish on the neck. You can not see that it has ever been repaired. It plays like a new one.
I thank you again. You saved a very nice 1962 Gibson J160E (it is a twin to the one John Lennon played with the Beatles).
