Mario you're the only person I know who takes delight in being called a grumpy troll...which I kinda like that about you.

Seriously folks...
Thanks for all the great ideas (about pickguards!!).
I will post a picture of my guitar as soon as I clean it up.
Thanks,

I'm planning to use a clear pickguard on the one I'm building. This way I can show off the nice Lutz top.

I think it's time for all of us Dreadnought/Dreadnaught lovers to come out of the closet.
Er, so to speak...
Let's face it, it's the most copied guitar style out there, and the most loved by consumers and players.

From this point forward, let it no longer be a dirty word here on the OLF.

Long live the Dread.....king of guitars.

Back on topic how many of you bought a pick guard from Stew-Mac or Martin or LMI and had an issue with it not being very shiny I did on a very early guitar and I micro-meshed the hell out of that thing on and off for a year and it never got any better.  I tried plastic polish being very careful to mask off the nitro but to no avail.  Then one day when sitting in the sun it looked different, like it had a very thin plastic protective cover over it......... Duuuuuh - a little picking with an X-acto blade and the protective cover was off and I had a very cool looking pick guard.......  Man did I feel stupid........

Don:  duck, duck, duck.........

Oh the horror.......OK without sounding to much like Nixon here I take full responsibility but not the blame........The d****n****t thing was here on the OLF when I got here and I picked it up from others.  So I didn't start it and some of my best friends are d****n****ts too.Like many of you I love all guitars but if given a choice would prefer to date an L-OO or an OM......
Yeah... I thought it was Serge that started it... but memory fails me...

regardless... I think we can all drop it and call a duck a duck...

what 'cha say?

(Sorry for derailing the thread)
Now, how about some love for our banjo builders and players...

That said, I like the Tor-tis pickguards that Brad mentioned earlier in his post. I've also got a sweet pickguard on a mid '60's Gibson LG-0. It's about 1/8 inch thick and held on with 3 screws. Like Mario said, I notice no tonal difference when I take it off.

I'm glad we have the cdreadnaught thing straightened out. 7 of the last 10 guitars I have built have been dreads... I kinda like them too.

I have been using the standard Martin pick guards for my guitars. I like the look of the tortise one as it has alot of red color in it. More red than many of the other brands I have seen.

DREADNOUGHT. I stand corrected.

I took the bait...      pardon me for participating.

Particularly when the end result would sound the same!

No problem with the correction Todd. I do appreciate that.

If your going to build it, you might as well know how to spell it.

Oops, sorry Brad.

Just to throw one more monkey into the wrenchworks, there are those who are very close to the subject (researching the history of the Dreadnought) who actually feel that since the original order placed for a large body Martin came from the Ditson company, the D actually stands for, wel you get it.  Who knows.  We'll probably never have a firm answer to that one but folklore has always pointed to battleship so that's probably the derivation.  Ditson, however, was no small contributor to Martin's success at that time so it's not a big stretch when you think about it.    Personally, I think it stood for Damnbig guitar.

Best

Bruce

I had a dreadnought once but it fell off the wall hanger and quacked up.

Fear not.....dred not.

DRED NOT, the word dreadnaught.

Thanks for the definition Todd. Makes sense.
