Dear Madam / Sir,

It seems you have capability to supply me new guitar for my collection,
and i'm thinking to add my new guitar collection from you or your company.

First i need to ask you a few question:

1. Do Credit Card acceptable for the payment method?
2. Do you use FedEx or DHL International for shipping to Singapore?

Please tell me about the question above and i will
start shared my interest that i would like to purchase from you.

Sincerely
Evelyn Thompson

Get 100% up front. Set up an account, receive the payment, clear out the account and close it.
This is 99.999999% likely a scam.
Once they get the guitar, they will contact the credit card company and get their money back.

Wait 'til the credit clears on the down payment before doing anything.

Then, wait 'til the credit clears on the final payment before shipping it.

Sorry, when things are too good to be true, they're usually false.

Didn't that lady have an uncle in Uganda that needed to move a couple of mil to an account in the US, and a $5,000 deposit would guarantee that it would come to your account, then you would receive a fee of 2% of the funds transferred?  You mean it's not real?  Shocked!

At least she took the time to find out what your company makes.

I take that back, she must be a cousin or something.  Just cause she spells the name wrong.  What can I say?

Dennis,
That will not protect you. When you ship the guitar, they will have the credit card take their money back. Unless the account is closed, you are still vulnerable.

Big time red flags flying all over in my head on this one.  I would go 100% cash only.  No credit cards, no money orders, no cashiers checks.... cash only.... period.

If the person is an honest buyer, she will understand that there are a ton of scams that come out of her country and will be willing to make you comfortable with the deal by giving you cash.  If not, you just saved yourself from being a victim.

Yeah, you're right. Might as well just give them a guitar, save yourself the aggravation of dealing with the credit card company.

I know this is just a scam, but for the business exercise, is there anything that is foolproof, other than cash? I have heard there are ways to stop a Certified Cashier's Check, even a real one, after it has been issued. Is a bank wire transfer the same as cash, or can they back out of that as well? Or, can they fake those transactions too, like they can fake cashier's checks?

Dennis

I think delivering it in person would be fun.

Gold bullion only. Never been to Singapore.

Bruce buddy the real shame of all this is that there probably is an Evelyn Thompson somewhere who is a victim of identity theft.  That is why the credit card would appear to be valid etc.

It might be interesting to turn this around on the perpetrator and call the FBI and ask if they have any interest in pursuing the matter.  Someone named Evelyn might be very grateful.

I get these kind of emails when I sell stuff on Craig's list, Recycler etc.
When I know it is a scam, I reply back to get their attention. They always respond. The response always confirms that it is a scam.
I ask them why they would think about treating a brother in this way, after all we are all brothers under God. Then I give them a preachy turn or burn/fire and brimstone message offering to help them on their spiritual journey.
They never reply back.
I think if we all did that, it would be a good thing. Bruce, why not give us the email address and we can all send them a nice message?

(I hope this is not in violation of the no religious discussion.)

Bruce, drop Hank M a line or search the archives. He had some serious fun with one of these guys a few years ago.

If you get the money up front, insist that they pay postage, including any postage that they may incur by shipping it back to you and you shipping it back to them, and they pay ALL customs and they DO NOT expect you to send them any money back in return then go ahead. If they meet all those conditions you have nothing to loose. Especially true if they pay with pay pal. Don't give them any personal banking info so that they can wire money into your account.

I was sent a counterfeit cashier's check once for 15000 dollars in payment for a guitar. They wanted me to send the difference to an account in London. I took the check to BankAmerica to see if they would cash it (since it had their name on it) and they seemed to have no problems with cashing it. However, once I asked them to look a little deeper they did discover it was counterfeit and when they asked them who would be liable for that money they of course said that I would be.

Poor Evelyn,
I had to tell her that she'd have to pay a $1000 dollar deposit and wait two years to get her guitar.

I just thought I'd let you guys in on the fun.
WHAT, do they think we rode into town on a head of CABBAGE!

It drips of scam,
So I must scoot.
I just hate to give....
Evelyn the boot!
She may be mad,
but I don't care.
Rippin' me off,
Just ain't fair!

Nice poetry Bruce...

It really is hard to believe that some people think we're stupid enough to fall for something like that.

For someone named Evelyn Thompson they speak in broken english more like someone asian. I guess they thought if they used an american/european sounding name you'd buy.

Guess it's not a cousin after all.  All my cousins can manage the language.  Course there is the name spelling thing too.
