Does anyone know of a good adhesive to use? I'm making vacuum frames from welded aluminum tubing and was thinking that it would be easier to glue the neoprene or gum rubber sheeting to the frame rather than sandwich it between the main frame and another, much thinner, frame. Can this be done? If so, I need some suggestions for adhesive.

Contact Loctite. They have some "toughened" CAs with rubber added that might work well

how about water based contact cement???

3M Yellow Weatherstrip Adhesive should work fine. Tape it in place for 24 hours.

I recently glued some rubber/urethane matting to a scuff sanded chrome surface and it worked quite well.

Like formica on a countertop, why not? hit both surfaces with glue, wait a bit, and bingo, you're done.

That would be quicker than Yellow three M from the automotive store.

Personally, I would build an upper frame to hold the rubber down. I used 3/16" lexan. Contact cement will hold for a while, but you don't want that puppy coming apart in the middle of a clamping operation.
I found that even with the upper frame, I still needed to glue the diaphragm down or the vacuum pulled the rubber out of the frame.
There are some hi tech polysulphide sealant/adhesives that would probably work. Check the marine stores in your area.
3M 5200 is my favourite of the one-part polysulphide adhesives.

silicone adhesive should work.
