My good buddy Dave Anderson let me know this morning that GAL is now offering a 1937 L-OO plan!  I immediately ordered two, one for my wall in my clean room, er...... shop, and one to perhaps build from.

On looks alone a 1937 Gibson sunbursted L-OO is my favorite guitar of all time.  I love em!!!!

They are nice plans.


I met Kerry Char, and he looked my L-00 copy over, I didn't know he had a special interest in them. The plans that I drew for myself from a great L-00 that was in my shop had one tone bar, surely an anomalie. I must admit that I did overlook the fact that the X was a butt joint. As he says, most have missed it because it lives under linen. Surely this has some to do with the "loose" flavor of a good L-00.

Does this set of plans have dimensions on it? I can't see them in the pic. Or maybe it is drawn to scale and you can just measure directly off the plans?

Thanks for posting this Hesh, this is currently my favorite guitar and the next one I will build. I think it's gonna be some of Uncle Bob's Cuban Mahogany with an adi top I got from Steve.

I noticed the same thing as Dave. No dimensions makes for a very flexible build!

Probably my favorite guitar I have ever owned is a sunburst L-00 that was reworked, probably when the guitar was new or nearly new, by Fred Van Eps and fit with one of his flush fret, scalloped fingerboards.  The original owner was a classic style banjoist who owned one of Fred's flush fret/scalloped "Recording Banjos" and wanted his guitar to have similar playability.  It was originally set up by Van Eps with a tailpiece and gut strings (like a classic banjo), but was later set back up with a pin bridge and steel strings.

The guitar is light as a feather and plays as if it were fretless.  Two tone bars though...

The flush fret scalloped fingerboard is basically a regular bar fret fingerboard where the bar frets are filed level with the top of the fingerboard.  The fingerboard is scalloped between the flush frets in the same way that a regular scalloped fingerboard would be done.  The end result is a fingerboard that feels very much like a fretless fingerboard, but plays in tune (at least in a tempered tuning...).  Van Eps actually scalloped his fingerboards before slotting/fretting them.  I have an unfretted/unslotted scalloped board from Van Eps' estate as well as a bunch of the fretwire he used.  He must have had some kind of indexing jig for the scallops.

Van Eps filed for a patent on the fingerboard, but apparently never received one (the guitar has "pat appld for" stamped on the end).  It could be because of the earlier Middlebrooke patent for a similar arrangement--http://www.google.com/patents?id=s-FhAAAAEBAJ&a mp;pg=PP1&dq=middlebrooke

I know that banjo talk is off limits here but there was a big debate among classic era banjoists over whether or not frets on banjos were merely there as  aids for incompetent  players.  The earlier players played fretless instruments, later on flush fret instruments came along (with inlaid position markers).  Van Eps' design tried to make the best of both worlds.  I believe he succeeded.  HOWEVER--these suckers are a royal pain to refret, and with steel strings, the frets do wear out.  Of course, Van Eps always played gut...

Dave buddy I don't know if it has dimensions - I hope so because measuring from paper is not a good idea since it shrinks and expands.  I'll let you know when I receive the plan.  I like that parts are in color.

If it is like the other GAL plans, it probably has some dimensions in the text on the page.  Otherwise, that is what the inch blocks at the top of the page are.  Supposedly, you can measure those and determine if the plan has shrunk or expanded, and by what percentage.
