Some posts have indicated that for some uses you spray your CA with accelerator, Why?
CA sets in as little as ten seconds-enough time? Have read that using accelerator weakens the glue joint-true?

I dont spray accelerator on the CA, but rather, ill give the piece a little spritz then hit it with the CA. I use accelerator for tacking down my mitered purfling joints, I dip the purf end in the accelerator to wet it, then place it on the guitar and hold it there with a chistle, then wick a drop of CA in, it takes hold instantly and im good to go.
I know that CA will dry fast, but some times not fast enough.

Oh I forgot to say, if yo spray accelerator direcly on a puddle of CA, it can cause a bubbly looking joint.

Dont ask

From a instrument builders point of view, like Lance I only use it to wet a piece I need to hold fast. It will bubble haze and actually causes cracking if sprayed on a puddle.

Like our frind Hesh, I am also a big bird rc model airplane builder. When I first got started build planes I used it a lot of accelerator with thick gap filling CA. But as my planes got bigger I rarely use accelerator any more other than to build alignment fixtures and non stressed attachments.

I've only been using CA for a year or so, but I've found that it doesn't set equally quickly with all woods. Some situations can require clamping or holding for a lot longer than 10 seconds. Some brands of CA are reputed to be 'hotter' than others as well.

I use the aerosol accelerator, BTW- it's more economical for me as I can dispense in small quantities- just a 'whiff' is usually enough, even when pre-treating. The 'pump' style seems to evaporate from the container before I use it; the pump seems to lose its 'prime' etc.

Cheers
John

Sorry for the high-jack Bob.

I never built any WW I stuff but I did build an F4U Corsair and a P51-D and later with a friend we built an F16 with an actual turbine engine that was imported from France.  The 16 was clocked at over 250 mph and was a real handful to control and even see...........

Many of the scaled down actual and historic planes did not translate well into scale RC planes.

RC helicopters was where I ended up after getting kind of bored with fixed wing and I learned to loop and roll helicopters.  I also learned that a single crash can cost you $1,000 or more..........

I lived in California at the time and once when flying a 6' RC helicopter near Mt. Diablo a stinking pigeon flew into my rotor and committed suicide.  My helicopter was a total loss and then along comes a Park Ranger who wrote me a ticket for killing the pigeon......  I had to go to court and pay a fine of $2000 for killing the pigeon.........  Now that was a bad day for both the pigeon and me.....

Guitars are much safer

Reminds me of a comedian (can't remember who) talking about Pop Tarts having microwave instructions on the package.

If you don't have time to toast a pop tart, you really need to look at your schedule.....

Good tip on the purfling miters Lance.

The reason for accelerator with some woods is to balance the pH for the CA to "kick".

BUT! No need to buy any accelerator. And in fact, I have to own any...

Just use baking soda. Lightly sprinkle some on the joint. Lightly. A pinch held a foot or two above the surface and lightly sprinkle it. If you can clearly see the soda, there's too much! Place the CA on the other piece, and then bring them together. Instant grab. The baking soda can also be used to strengthen CA'd joints in all materials. I repaired a friend's Toyota's shifter a few years ago when the "T" handle snapped one winter. I CA'd with baking soda, ten built it up a bit(like a weld bead) with CA and soda. It is still holding...

Many who are sensitized to CA are actually sensitized to the accelerator, which is often a nasty compound. Yet so unnecessary.

Wouldn't that (the legal stuff) be covered by your AMA liability policy? or were you not at a sanctioned flying site

Any takers?

Like we have a SHORTAGE of pidgeons in California!
They should have given YOU the $2000 as a Public Service!
Hard to imagine that you could chase down the pidgeon with the model helicopter even if you wanted to sacrifice several K$ worth of model/RC equipment. I would think a model air to air missile fired from the copter would have been more cost effective!

But then, this is the land of the self absorbed, with too much time on their hands and the need to hug a tree per day to find self validation! And Lord knows without the pidgeon San Francisco would fall apart...they provide the 'glue' to hold society together.

Hey, got a new Forum name for you...Felonious Hesh... you could be a jazz musician maybe!
