I posted pictures of this instrument a while back, and some of you requested sound clips. Here is a Youtube clip where it's owner Andres Aase plays a Halling, which is a type of traditional Norwegian music that is normally performed on the Hardanger fiddle, but arranged in this piece for guitar bouzouki by Andreas. That 'zouk is starting to sound really sweet. Andres is obviously very happy with it and you should be delighted too. That was mostly played on the trebles but the odd full chord shows that the bass strings really rumble too.

Next time try a Hardinger Guitar Bouzouki with some sympathetics inside, or maybe a harp guitar bouzouki

Yes, Andreas seems happy with the instrument. It was a bit of an experiment for the both of us, so it was great fun (and, I must admit, a big relief) when things turned out so well. He tells me the sounds he gets out of it has inspired him to arrange new material, and when he performs he now plays one set on traditional Norwegian music on solo guitar guitar bouzouki. I'm willing to bet that hasn't been done before!

Anyone interested in his music should check out his web page and listen to excerpts form his previous records there. I believe you can also order albums directly from the web site.

I really like this instrument. Great work, Arnt! The tone is spot on.

I love playing my Celtic guitar/Cittern. (must do a recording soon) Somehow the teardrop body shapes don't give the the tone I want.

   I really don't care for bouzouki's/mandolin's much but this sounds great!! I really mean that! Very imspiring.

    Excellent playing amd instrument!

outstanding Arnt! It is good to see the instruments being put to such good use.

On my last trip to Venezuela, one of the people I stayed with played an instrument he called a "quatro", which was almost identical to the bouzouki you made. I have intended to make myself one at some point just because I loved the sound of it so much.

one question: How is it tuned?

Ken, he tunes it FCGD low to high, which is one whole step down from the most common tuning for bouzoukis. The reason is that he plays with a Hardanger fiddle player sometimes, and according to Andreas this tuning works well with that instrument. It also meant that the G pair was a bit slack with the .017 plain strings he originally wanted, so we now have .024 nickle wounds on that pair. The other wound strings are phosphor bronze, but the G stings actually sound more balanced with the rest (especially when amplified) with the nickle wounds. This was something Andreas picked up from his friends among the British folk players, these instruments are much more common there than over here.

im not sure how i missed the previous thread with the pictures of this fine instrument, but im glad i caught them this time. that is a very beautiful looking and sounding guitzouki. the appointments, in my book, were perfectly chosen. very very nice. and i just love the sound. who doesnt love the sound of a bouzouki or mandolin family instrument (ill consider billy t a convert )? good job arnt.
