Hi All,

Many thanks to the entrants that took the time to build an instrument for this challenge. The object was to build a stringed instrument of your choice from "local" woods. The term "local" was left up to individual interpretation and the spirit of fairness. I believe all of the builders documented their wood sources. Please take the time to view their threads, listen to their videos and sound clips, and vote for the one that you feel deserves to win with all factors considered.

Sincerely,

--Jaybird

Great job all three of you. Plenty to be proud of here! These challenges are great experiences all around. I cast my vote but it wasn't easy.

Congrats to all three of you. Building with local woods stretches one's abilities and creativity and I thoroughly enjoyed how each of you incorporated your limited palate to create something very special.

Thanks all.
I really enjoyed the project and being the proud owner of a "talking point" guitar. I think I'll give it to my oldest friend who I haven't seen in 3 or 4 years but will be meeting this year.
He used to inspire me in his creativity. He made folk instruments from rudimentary tools and salvaged materials and could mess with the reeds of bagpipes for hours on end. Though this racket drove us all mad at the time, I now appreciate his dedication to the craft.

That was a very cool challenge and you all pulled it off exceptionally well. It was not easy to cast a vote. Good job! I especially like to see old materials put to good use and the clever ways to get around the local challenge theme.

Cool guitars all. I think it's great that folks are exploring alternative woods.

Ben-Had - Theo's thread is just below the other two. Here's a link:

I really enjoyed all these builds, and they really kept nicely to the spirit of the contest. Local woods builds are great fun. Wish I would have had time to participate.

Picking one out of the three for me was more random than anything. They are all winners. :D

Holy crap! Did I win?! Wow, thanks to all the voters! I wouldn't have been surprised at all to have come in third. All the builds were worthy of winning, IMO. It was a very fun project. Having it played on stage by Peter Mulvey and David Goodrich was really cool, as well. Thanks to Jay for running the contest, too.

Congratulations guys, awesome guitars. [clap]

Thanks everyone for voting and to Jay for hosting this challenge.

I really enjoyed this challenge. Its pretty awesome to see some 'local' builds from different places and see other peoples projects and approach, not to mention the fun participating in this kind of group endeavor with folks from different places. It's pretty great too that we made some cool guitars

I'm not sure if it's too soon to bring this up....but what about the 2015 Challenge? As I recall, I think a winner of the last Challenge hosted this one :D

Whatever happened to the agreement we would divide up the prizes between 1st, 2nd and 3rd?

CONGRATS MATT!! Well deserved.

You'll love that ziricote. I know you'll do her justice!

I am absolutely in love with mine. Never thought I'd set my old Yamaha aside, but I find it so much less satisfying than the new girl... and before you ask, pic and sound clip are on hold until she's officially complete. I have some fairly severe neck buzz issues that I am scheduling some shop time with a local luthier (Trevor Healy) to address.

I miss going up to Al's shop. Say "hi" to the gang!

Rob

Thank you James. It arrived yesterday and is quite nice! I've already got plans to use it for this year's New England Luthiers build! I'll be using a Carpathian spruce top and a set of ancient kauri for the back and sides. This is going to be a very busy year so hopefully I'll be able to get it done.

Joe, I picked the ziricote trim set. Should be your choice for the second prize.

Thanks, Rob! I wish I had gotten to see and play your ziricote guitar. It's an awesome feeling getting that first one strung up! I actually haven't been up to class yet this year. I was hoping to return last week, but Alan had to cancel class, so hopefully I'll get up there next weekend. Gotta get my baritone done. I hope you are able to get some pictures and sound clips up soon! And you gotta start another one!

Matt
