i am struggling with wood choices and staying within the spirit of the competition, soundboard being a issue, obviously spruce is not local and i have a thing for carpathian spruce, Texas is not exactly a hot bed for tone woods , however south of the border is something different with lots of choices including mexican ebony "katalox" for fretboards , so i was thinking of a south of the border theme and wanted to get some thoughts if that seemed fair oops_sign

I say if you feel its in the spirit of the rules and are up front with everyone there is no issue . If people do have an issue it it be in the voting that they decide . As far as I'm concerned , go for it. [:Y:]

That sounds fine to me. After all it is supposed to be "local", and Mexico is more local for you than say, Vermont, despite it being a different country.

As far as the soundboard being a struggle, that why this is called a Challenge. ;) You won't convince me that the Carpathian mountains are local. Doesn't east Texas have a few species of pine? Also, there are a variety of conifers in the mountains of northern Mexico just across the border that would probably work for soundboards, and no doubt have been used for that purpose.

Might look for Deodar Cedar. Pine grows like crazy in NE Texas.

I wouldn't consider Mexico out of reach for a Texan. I mean those borders are man made and have nothing to do with how close things are. I'm in TN does that mean if a specific tree grows in say KY it's not local? There are parts of TN that are much less local to me than KY. I say disregard man made lines of separation. If it's close enough that you consider it to be local then use it!

Pine top?? Cacti back and sides?? gaah gaah ....I will post the build as I go but In the spirit of the challenge I can't claim it to be local, and won't sacrifice the quality of the build to less than desirable woods which I have no experience with. [uncle] [uncle]
