I have this on my bench right now.

The customer is not overly concerned with the look (that doesn't mean I don't want it to look good), he wants functionality first and foremost. Just wanted some input on my plan which is the following:

Carve out the splintered bits into a dish shape in the same fashion as a violin soundpost patch (which I have done before). Cut a mahogany fill with as close matching wood grain as possible. Glue in the fill, cut sand and fingerplane to match the curve of the top. Finish over and done.

I have no experience with the finish on these cheaper PRS SE guitars. I informed the client of this and he is ok with it not looking as shiny as the rest. It's not an expensive guitar so I will likely opt for a shellac finish to save some money for him and to save myself some time in the shop. There is wood missing all the way to the edge of the finish on the entire thing. He does not have the broken chunk

Thoughts? Here is an example of the type of fill I want to use for this, a perfectly cut square fill I feel would look a bit akward with the slope shape of the guitar. Plus the break is in the sort of shape of the proposed fill already.

I like your plan. Keep it really simple and go for it. He's lucky to have found somebody willing to do the job. . .

Thanks Frank, it turned out fine I think. I just used a gouge to do most of the carving and shaping. Carved out the top and then flipped it over to carve the fill.

My fill

Put in carved and stained a bit

All done. Not perfect, but not ugly (depending on your point of view)

Well done. If that were mine I would be happy with that repair.
