Had a customers V here for a new neck. It was scratch built by a local guy here in New Jersey and it was a neck-thru design. Only problem was he didn't use a 1/4 sawn center piece and the neck twisted. Take a look at this picture and you can see how badly the neck is twisted. Just compare the angle of the nut to the pickup ring in the back ground. The headstock angles off to the left. Here is the other "mistake". Being its a neck-thru this guy built it with no neck angle. Note how high the neck sits off of the body and how the Tune-o-matic is bottomed out. And look at this HUGE heel. So what I plan on doing is cutting off the neck at the body, taking off the remainder of the neck until the wood is flush with the surface of the body and making a new neck for it . I used the 21st fret as my starting point as this fingerboard is a Stew-Mac board and i'll use a Stew-Mac board for the new neck. After I had all of measurements made and the neck drawn out on paper, I cut the neck off at 21st fret, shaved the material off of the top and routed a new mortise for a glued in neck using the measurements and drawings I made. The mortise is angeled at 2 degrees and the the portion of the body on which the FB will sit flush is also milled down to 2 degrees. Here's the new neck ( no, I didn't take any pictures of the neck build.....sorry ) The customer requested a small heel so he got it ! Frets are installed and the neck is glued up. The neck has been grain filled and the entire guitar has gotten 3 coats of sanding sealer. Soon as I get a chance the clear will go on. Here it is completed and it's off back to it's owner. |
