| Post subject: | Epoxy contaminated headstock break |
I have been tasked with repairing a re-broken headstock on a Les Paul that had been previously badly glued with what appears to be 5 minute epoxy. The joint is now badly contaminated with the cured adhesive. It is soft enough to pick at but difficult to get out of the fibers. What is the best way to clean this and then reglue it? It is a very bad break. Thanks, Craig |

Sit down with a sharp Exacto knife and a toothbrush. Have fun, and thank your lucky stars it wasn't hot glue. |

You might also try using a heat gun to soften the epoxy then use a stiff-bristle brush to scrub the glue out of the break. You'll never get the epoxy that's soaked into the wood out of the wood fibers. On the bright side, if it really was 5-minute epoxy, it won't have had time to soak very deeply into the wood before curing so you may be able to get down to bare wood as the glue had only a mechanical bond to the surface. |

It certainly seems to have the texture of 5 min epoxy, a bit soft. I'll clean it out as meticulously as I can, reglue and apply a backstrap overlay. |
