Question for you fellas. Is is viable for a bit of a newbie with a lot of time (and a new soundboard/sides) to turn this http://www.ebay.ca/ulk/itm/272091102504 into a nice guitar? Tyson k |

Simple answer, no. It would take less work to achieve better results by starting from scratch. That's the equivalent of a Chevette that had 300,000 miles put on it, then was crashed, caught on fire, submerged in a flood, and left to rust for 20 years. Some things just aren't worth fixing. |

Tyson, I pretty much agree with what David said. You can buy that Martin new for under $600 and most of it isn't wood. The lower end Martins are High Pressure Laminate which is pretty much the stuff you have on your counter tops. The fretboard and bridge are made from compressed paper so it is basically a throw away guitar if something serious goes wrong with it. Even if It was all wood the level of knowledge it would take to build a new one out of it is beyond (as you say) "bit of a newbie" task. Essentially you would be starting with a neck... You may want to think about buying a kit guitar. You will gain a lot of knowledge in the process and a lot of the difficult tasks that you probably don't have the tools to do will already be done. In the end you will end up with a really good knowledge and a guitar that is much better quality than something you could buy for the same $$$. Cheers, Bob |

Yeah it looked like nothing but a salvage. The neck and maybe the back. But knowing it is not wood it is not even worth a thought. I plan in the future I will do a kit guitar whether it be acoustic or electric it will happen. Thank guys, Tyson k |

I will take almost any St. Jude case just for the experience, but this one doesn't look like it is coming back. I'd tell Pete Townsend or whomever did this, it's over . I can't see the materials really well, but seems like a good price for a potpourri that includes a neck & block, bridge, bridge pins, and a pickup. I think that might be one of those laminated striped necks, which some people frown on, but I think are kind of fun to look at , like one of those turn your own pen casing kits from Woodcraft. Cheers. Oh, geez, just saw the freight. ooops. |

For as much work that it would need in the end you'll probably spend more then it would cost to buy a nice kit. Kits are great for giving you the experience of seeing how the parts look and are made before assembling the guitar. Sent from my HTC Desire 626s using Tapatalk |

Tyson, If you are looking for a decent guitar for repair you should have a look at this. It is a 68 Gibson B-15 which may need a neck reset and probably some other work (bridge plate and new bridge) but it can be a great stepping stone in learning guitar repair. When done it would make a great little player and is valued around $800. 11 hours left on bidding on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1968-Gibson-LG-0-B-15-Parlor-Flat-Top-Acoustic-Guitar-/121851856169?hash=item1c5eefc529:g:H24AAOSwSdZWguWm This would be the type of guitar I would be looking for if I were you... or if I were me... of if I knew now what I didn't know then... you know what I mean... But either way this might be a great deal. Cheers, Bob |
