no this guitar should never have steel strings, it is too lightly built. It has small fan braces and the top is .0625 . The steel strings are what damaged the guitar in the first place. Steel strings didn't come into production guitars until the 20's . At that time they were starting to make the heavier braced for the added stress. even with nylon strings it is a surprise in the volume and tone. |

Nice going John - very cool project! We've got an 1870's Martin that Dave's doing a multi-year restoration on too. I think that you could get away with silk and steel strings (Martin brand) on these, much less tension than steel but more volume than nylon. I spent some time looking at all of the parts on the one that we have and from the ice cream cone heel on the neck to the slots in the slot head it is very clear that these guys took great pride in their work AND were very talented as well. Lots of hand work and beautiful hand work to boot. The term deliberateness of craftsmanship comes to mind! I think that I measured side thickness of .060" and less in areas too and they weigh very little as well. Thanks for sharing John and I hope that you are enjoying this project too. |
