I am doing a neck reset on a '40s era K192. Pulled the 15th fret as usual and drilled through but can't seem to find the pocket Anybody familiar with this or other old Kays with any ideas for me? Thanks, Craig |

Found my way in. Followed Frank Ford's advise and removed the heel cap and went in from the bottom. The pocket was easily hit. |

Well this is turning out to be a total b$@&? . The yahoo who glued the neck on previously filled the entire neck pocket with glue. So the steam is not penetrating easily or deeply. In addition, the cantilevered fretboard extension was glued down to the top. The combined thickness of the fb and the extension is too great to allow heat to penetrate through to soften the glue without causing all of the pieces to delaminate, so I am slowly going at it by heating my pallette knives and working them under. I was hoping that the steam would work its way up the pocket and soften the glue adhering the extension to the top, but the glue filled pocket is preventing that. Oh well, back to the grind. Any ideas? |

Well, I got it! More holes, more steam, and went REAL slow. Called Gryphon for advise and moral support. They said I was on the right track and felt my pain. Now to let it dry out, cleannit up, and then reset it. There was enough glue in there to build a whole guitar. On the cheeks of the heel and all three sides of the dovetail as well as filling the pocket. |

Nice going Craig and a difficult one to do too! That "Yahoo" seems to get around and loves using copious amounts of unnecessary glue on neck sets of lots of guitar brands... Someone ought to have a talk with this glue happy puke... One of the things that we hate is when the maker glues the neck cheeks to the rim walls.... fun.... What's next for the Kay? They can make excellent players and have that vintage archie tone that I really like! |

After I repair the damage where the extension was glued to the top, i need to replace the missing adjuster wheels for the bridge that went missing a long time ago. The thresd size is larger than any available current offerings so I am going to drill out a set and tap them to the correct size. A piece of binding is missing, the headstock inlay is curling up out of its pocket and the electronics need cleaning. After that, a good setup and this baby will go home to papa. |
