A Buddy dropped off his mando. His wifes electric bass fell on it and cracked the neck.
The crack starts along a joint but starts to crack the wood part way. The arrow points to where the wood is cracking.

I think I need to open it up so I can clean up a failed repair.
Any suggestions.

I agree , it appears to me that it is cracked along the original repair. That shouldn't be happening.

Thanks Wood, I need to open it up to clean up the epoxy that was used to try to fix the break before I got it.
I'm not sure if I should try to open it up and squirt some epoxy in it or go ahead and complete the break so it's easier to clean up.

I believe I would get it apart. Steam / Heat and repair accordingly. That repair is failing.

It will be a pain, but you gotta do it Dave.
Good luck, man!

went ahead and took it apart last knight.
I tried to get it to come apart at the joint but half way through it followed one of the cracks pointed out in the first picture.
I "think" I should take the chipped part off then repair both breaks then refit the original joint.

It will be easier to clean out all the old gunk that way.
You're doing great, Dave!

Well that didn't go so well.
No tendons or ligaments, got lucky.
I'll need to wait a week or so before i continue.
Still dumber than a box of rocks.

Ow! That looks like an evil chisel accident. I doesn't look lucky, but no tendon or ligament damage certainly makes it lucky, and anyone who uses tools will get stitches sooner or later, Dave.

Jeeze Dave! They didn't clean up your finger before they stitched it? Or after? If you need a hand (or a finger) give me a holler. I can always lend a hand. And after July 10th, I'll have way more time to help....

Well that's the plan at the moment. I have a 14X24 shed coming to put the wood working tools in.
We still need to collect those of us close by for a little fellowship.

Got back to working on this Mando.
The neck is glued back together.
It's not pretty I'm hoping it holds.
used slow setting epoxy from Stew Mac.
Now I'm starting on the finish.

When you have a nice repair like that you almost want to just clear coat it so they can see what's happened to the poor baby, and how well it was fixed.

I'm not sure how I would go about hiding the repair.
Thinking about using true oil.
It should sound better, when I cut my finger I put some "Rickard tone enhancing DNA" on it.
