Doug Balzer Tinozza Acoustic Bass Guitar Build thread found here: http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10134&t=38815 Specs -1st build -Scratch build -Curly Sitka top, sitka bracing -Curly big leaf maple sides and back -Walnut binding -Laminated maple neck -Ebony bridge & fingerboard -Claro Walnut headstock veneer -Finished using TruOil -34"" scale -Flat wound, 1/4 size classical bass strings (Thomastic Spirocore) -Gotoh tuners -I built my own outside mold using R.M. Mottola's plan Videos First brief video: Forgive my sub-par abilities playing on a fretless bass but I think the video will, nonetheless, give you an idea of the unique sound this instrument produces. The audio from the video is pure, that is, it did not run through the K&K pick-up that is resident on the bass nor was it manipulated in any way while editing. Audio was collected from external microphones. Special thanks to my brother, Michael Haslett of Global National News, who did all the recording and editing for this video demo. http://youtu.be/f0iBG0ZqMPs Mottola was kind enough to link the above video on his website pertaining to his bass design: http://liutaiomottola.com/instruments/Tinozza.htm Second brief video: My friend Danny Hagan (former Nashville studio musician - played for Randy Travis for a while) really does some justice to the instrument however the audio on this is far from desirable...but here is it nonetheless. Recorded on an iPhone and the bass is playing through an amp via the K&K pickup. http://youtu.be/Zs0ZwWg2PS0 |

Nick Tredwell - Native timbers build The full build thread can be found here http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10134&t=38820 My plan was to use all native (UK) timbers as far as possible, and those that was unable to source home grown were sourced as close as possible. Model - 00 based on the Grellier plan http://www.grellier.fr/plans/Acoustic_g ... _00_en.pdf Back & Sides - English Cherry Soundboard - European (Alpine) Spruce - Hope fully this is the only part I wont be able to source locally. Bracing - European Spruce Neck - English Sycamore Fretboard - Bog Oak Bridge - Bog Oak Binding - English Walnut with black pear black purflings Rosette - English Cherry with black pear black purflings Tuners - Grover Sta-tites Firs of all I apologise for the quality of the audio clip, firstly due to my abysmal playing and secondly a it was recorded through my laptop mic, but if you are brave, here goes. http://www.tredwellinstruments.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/soundbite1.mp3 |

Wow! I got away from following many of these in real time and am slowly trying to catch up on them. I am very impressed by the entries from both categories. I'm getting ready to burn my first few instruments as a result. Great job everyone. Voting is going to be difficult! |

No kidding! These are first efforts? What do you two do in your day jobs, hand build elaborate marquetry staircases or something? Well done! |

These are both outstanding looking instruments. I like the tail wedge on Doug's bass, the native timber used by Nick...this is tough. I almost want to toss a coin because I am very torn. Neither looks like a first effort. Top notch work guys. I can't wait to see what you are building after you get a few under your belts. I may have to swing by Bryan Bear's place to toss my first couple on the fire too! |

It would be so much easier if it were like a union vote, where you could stick an extra ballot in your sock! Alex |

Thanks Zeke. This has been a fantastic experience for me with so many others submitting tremendous and creative entries. What can I say? I'm hooked. Currently working on #3 & 4 with 5 & 6 already on the drawing board. Thanks Wud for putting this together and to many of you for the helping hands along the way! On then other hand, you have all negatively contributed to the declining state of my bank account |
